The legendary Nano Mini Car, once launched as the world’s cheapest car, may be returning to Indian roads in a bold new avatar. Industry sources and auto insiders suggest that Tata Motors is exploring the idea of relaunching the Nano as a compact electric vehicle (EV) under the company’s growing electric lineup. If these rumours materialize, the Nano Mini Car could once again revolutionize the entry-level segment—this time with an eco-friendly focus.
A Modern, Compact EV for City Commuters
Unlike the original petrol-powered model, the new Nano Mini Car is expected to be fully electric, designed for city driving, short-range commuting, and compact urban mobility. With Tata’s advancements in EV platforms, especially seen in the Tiago EV and Punch EV, the Nano EV could offer a range of 150–200 km on a single charge, making it ideal for daily use without adding to fuel expenses. The car is also expected to feature a redesigned body, updated interiors, and modern safety features while maintaining its minimal footprint and affordability.
Target Price Could Make It India’s Cheapest Electric Car
If launched, the Nano Mini Car could be priced under ₹5 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most accessible EVs in the country. This would cater especially to first-time car buyers, students, small families, and urban residents looking for a low-maintenance, budget-friendly vehicle. With increasing government subsidies and EV-focused policies, Tata Motors could make the Nano EV even more affordable through schemes like FAME-II.
Launch Status: Concept or Reality?
While Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the relaunch, the concept of a Nano EV has gained traction ever since Ratan Tata was seen testing a custom-built Nano Electric model. If Tata gives the green light, the Nano Mini Car could debut in late 2025 or early 2026, possibly under the Tata.ev sub-brand. The company is likely to focus on build quality, safety, and essential tech features like regenerative braking and connected car tech to appeal to younger drivers.
If the Tata Nano Mini Car returns as an electric vehicle, it could once again disrupt the Indian automotive market.
